remarques: | article "Tintin discovers America" by T.F. Mills in Comics Journal no 86, November 1983 Tintin still relatively unknown in the States (1983) Tintin's first appearance in Britain was 1958 and was given an unexpected boost from the Times Literary supplement as well as 1960 by the announcement in the US Newsweek "here is a good comic" some passages taken from the article: - Tintin is readily recognized by the tuft of hair atop his round face and by the golf-knickers that he wore until recently - Tintin as an undeveloped figure among the others surrounding him - women are absent in Tintin's adventures (with the exception of the Castafiore) because when they are charming, they are not as loyal as Snowy) - Tintin has never directly killed anybody - curious appearance of Haddock in the land of black gold without being able to finish his explanations - Castafiore's emerald expressing perhaps Hergé's desire to retire, similarity of the Castafiore with Maria Callas - the château de Moulinsart becoming "Marlinspike hall" in the English edition n.b. in an allusion to the Haddock family's maritime history, the hall's English name refers to the marlinspike, a tool used in seamanship to slice ropes, in the American edition by Golden Press, the hall was named Hudson Manor as if to suggest it was one of the large estates along the Hudson River in New York State - the educational value of the Tintin books "Tintin, c'est moi" used to mention Hergé - the Hergé team is recognized as the leader of what is called the Brussels school of cartooning which is characterized by detailed yet clear artwork and high quality offset color printing that is rarely seen in American comics titles of books published with English traduction the blue lotus is in preparation and Tintin in Congo as well as Tintin in the land of the Soviets are not going to be published (1983): - Tintin in America - Cigars of the pharaoh - Tintin and the broken ear - the Black Island - King Ottokar's sceptre - the crab with the golden claws - the shooting star - the secret of the Unicorn - Red Rackham's treasure - the seven crystal balls - prisoners of the sun - land of the black gold - destination moon - explorers on the moon - the Calculus affair - the Red Sea sharks - Tintin in Tibet - the Castafiore's emerald - flight 714 - Tintin and the Picaros >> an excellent article about Hergé, Tintin, Snowy and the whole Tintin family |
